Who can forget the sight of Sonic drowning in Chemical Plant Zone’s pink acid? The trick would be much more effective, though, if the Sonic series hadn’t spent the best part of 15 years celebrating its own past on many occasions. ![]() It’s a great trick, capitalising on the warm nostalgia of favourite old levels, and also the familiar dread of where many 90s Sonic players met their end. Very familiar Green Hills they are too, as Sonic Mania is in part a greatest hits package, with most of the levels being remixes of stages from the original Mega Drive games. All the player has to do is watch in wonder as Sonic spins and dashes through corkscrews and pipes, flies up into Sega-blue skies and rushes down green hills. For every tricky series of precision leaps and enemy-filled gauntlets, Sonic Mania rewards players with breathless rushes where the blue blur’s momentum takes care of everything. The secret is to embrace the lack of control. Over the years he’s been too twitchy, or too stubborn too heavy, or too floaty and always too eager to fall off the nearest ledge into the abyss below. He’s a hedgehog that runs fast, so naturally it’s a tricky feat to accomplish. One of the problems that Sonic games have had in the near two-decades since the last great one is making him fun to control. The player guides Sonic, Tails and Knuckles across two-dimensional rollercoaster levels (sorry, “zones”) made in the style of the Mega Drive originals and full of loops, springs and spike traps. All those horrid secondary characters we’ve grown to hate over the years are nowhere to be seen, save for a couple of cameos that only hardcore Sonic fans will even recognise such as the cast of Sonic Championship. If the 90s had never ended, Sonic Mania is the follow-up we would have had instead of making do playing Big the Cat fishing mini-games in Sonic Adventure. After years of ill-thought out additions - werehogs, treasure hunts, royal love interests, even the third-dimension was arguably a stretch too far - it has taken an officially endorsed fan-game to recapture the essence of what made Sonic the only real challenge to Mario’s platforming crown all those years ago. After Sonic the Hedgehog and its Mega Drive sequels captured the imaginations of school kids around the world in 1991, the development studio behind the character hasn’t quite been able to find the magic formula that made the original game such a hit. ![]() If you’d rather not mess with UVs, you’ll really appreciate the easy new Automatic Unwrap option. Removing the ironman requirement isn't suddenly going to cause everyone to be cheating achievements, you'll have a few who do (I'd bet there already are plenty who have using SAM or Cheat Engine) but it'd be a minority of people. But if you look at achievement completion percentages it's not any higher than most games. You say it as if everyone were going to cheat for achievements if there wasn't an ironman requirement, but if you look at say Skyrim where there are literally a mod you can install [that unlock every achievement. Someone else doing it legit doesn't reward you, someone else cheating it doesn't cheat you of your reward since the act of legitimately gaining the achievement will still be just as difficult for you to achieve regardless of how others obtained it and you'll know how difficult it was because you'll have done it and can make that judgement yourself.Īgain, I could use SAM to unlock every single achievement right now if I so wished and you wouldn't be affected in the slightest, you wouldn't even know. It doesn't matter whether or not someone else achieved it legitimately or not because you've achieved it legitimately and it gives you the rewarding feeling of having completed it. The only reward for an achievement is the knowledge that you did it, if you cheated it all you get is a ticked off box. Originally posted by DonJuanDoja: The same argument really well you should of thought of that before buying this one lol. only thing I could come up with is someone who wants to 100% all your games. So thanks to Paradox for keeping them valuable. ![]() If they're easy to cheat well then they become incredibly devalued and no one cares anymore. Which is the only purpose of them anyways. If everyone knows they're hard to get then the feeling of achievement increases. It downgrades the value of the achievement. All the ironman requirement does is force people who want achievements legit to play a mode they might not enjoy (I enjoy being able to drop a save whenever and come back to it later to try something different without needing to start from scratch and I also enjoy mods, can't do either of those in ironman) and people who do want to cheat achievements can still cheat them regardless (I could use Steam Achievement Manager right now to unlock everything if I wanted, an ironman requirement won't stop that).Īctually it does. If some people want to cheat achievements let them, it doesn't hurt anyone or diminish the achievement of people who did it legitimately. If someone else decides to cheat how does that impact you in any way? It doesn't. Apple's moving iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 together, forward, for a new era of interdevice and intersystem communication. The Mac's operating system is beyond mature, but there's huge room for improvement. ![]() iCloud DriveĪpple's integration with cloud-based storage and services continues with 10.10 and iOS 8 thanks to iCloud, which lets you store any kind of file online. It will view search results from Wikipedia, the App Store, iTunes Store, iBooks Store and more. Apple's search feature in OS X has been taken out of the realm of just file search now it can find applications (making it a potential replacement for Apple's Launchpad app) and content on the Internet (putting it toe to toe with the popular third-party tool Alfred). Apple's also introducing Notification Center Widgets to help you view your calendar, weather, stocks, reminders and a World Clock, and the API is open for developers to use to create custom Widgets that can be downloaded from the Mac App Store. Notification Center gets a rework with the new Today view - a quick look at everything you need to know. That changes with OS X 10.10 as the teams at Apple get their protocols back in sync and their cross-platform beaming fully in order. OS X 10.10 and AirDropĪirDrop debuted on the Mac but after several initial attempts to bring it to iOS were shot down as overly complex, the version that finally shipped in iOS 7 wasn't even compatible with the Mac. And Instant Hotspot lets your Mac use your phone more easily. Handoff, for example, lets you start an activity on your iPad or iPhone and continue it on your Mac. Continuity is what Apple's calling that - design that enables one device to complement the other. ![]() ContinuityĪpple doesn't seem compelled to blur the lines between iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 as much as obliterate them, at least where it makes sense to. Depth, deference and clarity are the design guidelines Apple first employed in iOS 7, and now we're seeing that work continue over to Yosemite. An updated system font also improves readability. Yosemite employs clearer, smarter and easier-to-understand controls, with streamline toolbars, translucent elements and clean, consistent icon design. The intent was always to go back and give OS X the design attention it deserved as well. Last year Jony Ive and Apple's design team spent so much time working on iOS 7's new look, OS X mostly got the linen and the leather - if not the felt - stripped out but not much else. There are a ton of new features under the hood. In addition to new features, OS X brings interface and experience refinements to Apple's desktop operating system, similar in spirit if not exact execution to the iOS 7 makeover of 2013 - interface depth and translucency effects, textual clarity and other elements to improve the overall user experience.īut that's just scratching the surface. I'm assuming that the same limitations may exist for an external USB drive that exceeds 2Tb in capacity, but what I don't know is whether a large single GUID partition can be mounted under WinPE 2.0. In order to use the full capacity of the drive as a single partition, I had to use the GUID partition option. One other thing I would like to mention at this point - my new system includes a 3Tb hard disk internally, and I found that under Windows 7 64 bit, the largest "regular" partition I could create was 2Tb. This is something that the Ghost software pretty much automates for you, but you need to first add the drivers, and then select them from the list of all available drivers otherwise they will not be included in the new boot image. To avoid having to use DRVLOAD each time, the next step would be to integrate the drivers into WinPE and create a new bootable WinPE image. This process confirmed that I had the correct Vista 32 bit drivers required by my version of WinPE. Once these two steps were completed, I was able to find the driver letter on which the USB 3.0 drive was now to be found, and was able to read and write to the drive.
